Mayflower

A fascinating book that I received at Christmas from my son, Matthew was the book "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick which chronicles the Pilgrims journey to the America and the start up of the Plymouth colony in 1620. The book follows the Pilgrims for 50 years as the makeup of the new land now called "New England" changes as more people arrive from England.

It traces the importance of the Native Americans in helping to sustain the early settlers and the alliances that were forged with different communities. It is one of the most enthralling books that I have read in a long time. Well written, well researched, a must read.

Sermons Preached by Edwards (1725-1760)

Jonathan Edwards one of the great preachers and theologians of America comes alive in the "Altogether Lovely" which presents several sermons preached by Edwards on the loveliness of Jesus Christ. Sermons including “God the Best Portion of the Christian,” “The Excellency of Jesus Christ,” “Christ Exalted,” and many others emphasize the beauty to be found in the Savior and give us a glimpse into the warm, personal devotional life of Ewards.

I highly recommend "Altogher Lovely" whcih I found to be an eaiser read than "Freedom of the Will" or The Ends for which God Created the World." This book gives a wonderful portrait of how excellent and lovely Christ is in the believers life. One of my favorite hymns that came to mind frequently as I read was Beautiful Savior.

Daily Bible Reading Plan for 2007

As I start a new year one of the things that I do is to read the Bible through in a year. I need to be intentional in order to accomplish this goal. I use a reading plan to keep me on track. There are several on the internet. Here is a Bible Reading Plan from the Bethelehem Baptist web site that would be a great tool for you to start with if you haven't tried reading the bible through in a year. It also allows for make up days. May God bless you as you read His word in 2007.

Fighter Verse Memory Plan

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18
With a new year upon us resolutions are made. One that would be a profitable resolution is to hid Gods Word in your heart through scripture memory. As with a Bible Reading Plan there are Memory Plans as well. Here is a link to one that may help you put some key verese to memory during 2007. They are called figheter verses memory plan located at the highlighted link. It is never to late to start. It is hard work as I have found out. It seems the older you get the harder it becomes. I may have to rehearse a verse hundreds of times in order for it to stick.

Is it worth it? Many times when I have been involved with another person God has brought to mind just the right verse for the moment. So a resounding YES.

Start today with this upcoming Fighter Verse:
Jeremiah 32:40 (ESV - To be recited January 20-21)
I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.
